Real Madrid vs Villarreal – La Liga

Match Day 38 encounter, with Real Madrid taking on Villarreal on Saturday the 22nd of May, 2021, at Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano.

Real Madrid visited Athletic Bilbao last weekend, knowing that they absolutely had to win that game, while at the same time hoping that Osasuna would perform a small miracle and avoid defeat against Atlético in Madrid. The Merengues… did their duty, won 0-1 thanks to a goal in the 68th minute, but Osasuna lost 2-1 (despite taking the lead in the 75th minute), meaning that Real Madrid do not depend on themselves alone today. Their current form reads; WWDLW. They are on 81 points from 37 matches, sitting 2nd in the table, two points behind leaders Atlético Madrid, who are visiting relegation-threatened Real Valladolid

. Real Madrid need to beat Villarreal, this is an absolute must, so as to move up to 84 points. If that happens, they win the La Liga title if Atlético Madrid lose in Valladolid, but also if they draw. In the latter case, the two teams will finish on 84 points each and Real Madrid will be the champions, as they have done better in their head-to-head matches against their big city rivals. The Merengues have 24W, 9D and 4L, having scored 65 goals and conceded 27. Coach Zinédine Zidane played a 4-3-3 formation against Athletic last weekend. Interestingly, it was Nacho who scored the only goal of the match.

Villarreal hosted Sevilla last weekend, finished the first half leading 1-0 and sort of… exploded after the interval, taking advantage of the fact that their guests were left with 10 men in the 52nd minute, with the score already at 2-0. Final, 4-0(!). Villarreal’s current form reads; WWLDW. They are on 58 points from 37 matches, sitting 7th in the table. They have 15W, 13D and 9L, having scored 59 goals and conceded 42. Coach Unai Emery played a 4-4-2 formation against Sevilla last weekend, with Bacca and Moreno up front. The Colombian scored three goals(!) and Moreno added the other one.

If the season were over already, Villarreal would be playing in the Europa Conference League next season, but they can still move higher in the table and earn a Europa League ticket and of course don’t forget that in a few days they will be facing Manchester United in the Europa League final, with a ticket to next season’s Champions League at stake for the Spanish side.

In the reverse fixture back in November, Villarreal and Real Madrid drew 1-1.

A 2-1 victory for the hosts is predicted at full-time.

Date: Saturday, 22nd of May, 2021.

Venue: Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano

Kick-off time: 18:00 (GMT+2).
