Real Valladolid vs Atlético Madrid – La Liga

Match Day 38 encounter, with Real Valladolid taking on Real Madrid on Saturday the 22nd of May, 2021, at Estadio Municipal José Zorrilla.

Massive game for both sides… Last weekend, Real Valladolid visited Real Sociedad, got… destroyed by 4-1 (losing 4-0 by the 35th minute), suffering their third defeat in a row. Their current form reads; LLLDD. They are on 31 points from 37 matches, sitting second-to-last in the table, with their back against the wall, but they are not “dead” yet; Huesca, sitting in 17th, and Elche, sitting in 18th, are two points above Real Valladolid. To avoid relegation, they absolutely must beat Atlético Madrid (a “simple” draw would do no good),

while at the same time hoping that both Huesca and Elche will lose their games. Valladolid have 5W, 16D and 16L, having scored 33 goals and conceded 55. Coach Sergio González Soriano played a 4-4-2 formation against Real Sociedad last weekend, with Kodro and Jota up front. Brazilian Maranhão scored for Valladolid, but late, in the 82nd minute, with the score already at 4-0 for Real Sociedad.

Atlético Madrid have come too close to miss the La Liga title… Last weekend they beat Osasuna 2-1 at home, despite going 0-1 down in the 75th minute(!). Their current form reads; WWDWL. They are on 83 points, at the top of the table, two points above 2nd-placed Real Madrid. Atleti need to win this game, so as not to care what Real Madrid do – simultaneously – at home against Villarreal. If Atlético lose or even draw, and Real Madrid win their game, Diego Simeone’s side will be left second. Remember,

if they finish on 84 points each (draw for Atleti, win for Real Madrid), it’s the Merengues who win the title, because they have done better in their head-to-head matches. Atlético have 25W, 8D and 4L, having scored 65 goals and conceded 24. Coach Simeone played a 4-3-3 formation against Osasuna last weekend, with Luis Suárez as number 9. The Uruguayan scored the winner in the 88th minute. Renan Lodi had equalized 1-1 in the 82nd.

In the reverse fixture back in December, Atlético won 2-0 in Madrid.
A 0-2 victory for the visitors is predicted at full-time.
