Copa América group stage game, with Argentina taking on Uruguay on Saturday the 19th of June, 2021, at Estádio Nacional de Brasília.

Argentina debuted in this Copa América tournament against Chile a few days ago, were definitely the better team on the pitch during most of the game, opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, but just couldn’t build on that, got equalized in the 57th minute and had to settle for a 1-1 draw. Their current form reads; DDDWD. Earlier this month they played against Chile and Colombia in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, in both matches they scored first,

in Colombia they were 0-2 up less than 10 minutes into the match, in both matches they were better than their rivals, but… annoyingly (for them), all they managed was a 1-1 and 2-2 draw. You start noticing a pattern, having their Copa América debut in mind as well… Coach Lionel Scaloni played a 4-3-3 formation the other day. Lionel Messi scored Argentina’s only goal with an exquisite foul-kick.

As the two groups in this Copa América tournament have five teams each, in Match Day 1 there were two teams that did not play; in this group, it was Uruguay who… sat back and watched the other four group members debut. Their most recent game is a goalless draw against Venezuela in Caracas, almost 10 days ago, a match for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. Their current form reads;

DDLWL. Coach Óscar Tabárez played a 4-1-4-1 formation against Venezuela a week and a half ago, with Luis Suárez up front. With four teams from each group qualifying for the quarterfinals, Uruguay basically need to leave one team below them, most probably Bolivia, but they would definitely prefer avoiding finishing 4th, so as to minimize the risk of facing Brazil in the quartefinals.

Argentina and Uruguay have met an astonishing 196 times in the past, with the Argentinians having a better record of 90W, 48D and 58L. Things look very different if we isolate the Copa América games though, in which the Argentinians have 15W, 4D and 13L, the gap between the two is much-much smaller. Last time they met in Copa América, in Chile, six years ago, Argentina won 1-0.

A 1-1 draw is predicted at full-time.
Date: Saturday, 19th of June, 2021.
