Euro 2020 Finals encounter, with Italy taking on Switzerland on Wednesday the 16th of June, 2021, at Stadio Olimpico, in Rome.

Italy found things difficult against Turkey on their debut last Friday, went to the dressing room at halftime drawing 0-0, but after opening the scoring in the 53rd minute, they left no doubt over who would be winning the game. Final score, 3-0, exactly what the Italians deserved. Their current form reads; WWWWW. The three points they earned on their debut and, probably most of all,

the way they looked on the pitch, makes probably everyone feel that they will go on to win this group, not just qualify for the last 16, but finish top of their group. Coach Roberto Mancini played a 4-3-3 formation against Turkey last Friday. Their opener was an own-goal scored by Juventus’ Demirel. Immobile made 2-0 in the 66th minute and Insigne added the – beautiful – cherry on top in the 79th minute with a curvy finish.

Switzerland faced Wales on their debut on Saturday, were by far the better team on the pitch in the first 45 minutes, did not score, but in the 49th minute they did take the lead, deservedly. Right after that, Wales started looking like a very different team, from passive spectators they started… demanding things on the pitch, equalized in the 74th minute, but probably thankfully for the Swiss, the Welsh retreated after equalizing, showing hardly any interest in winning the game. Final score,

1-1, a… bittersweet result for Switzerland. Their current form reads; DWWWW. Coach Vladimir Petković played a 3-4-1-2 formation last weekend, with Seferovic and Embolo up front. The former wasted good chances to score. The latter found the back of the net in the 49th minute and generally impressed with several initiatives he took.

Italy and Switzerland have met a whooping 58 times in the past, with the Italians having a clearly better record of 28W, 22D and 8L. They have not faced each other since 2010 though; in June that year, just before the World Cup finals in South Africa, Switzerland and Italy drew 1-1 in a friendly game. This is their first encounter ever in Euro finals.

A 2-1 victory for Italy is predicted at full-time.
Date: Wednesday, 16th of June, 2021.
