Euro 2020 Finals encounter, with Ukraine taking on Austria on Monday the 21st of June, 2021, at Arena Naţională, in Bucharest.

After losing 3-2 to the Netherlands on their group debut, Ukraine beat North Macedonia 2-1, making a massive step towards qualifying for the last 16. They are on three points from two matches, sitting second in the group table, assured of a top three finish. Austria are also on three points, the two teams have the same goal difference, neutral (0), but Ukraine’s goals are 4-4, while Austria’s are 3-3. What this means is that if this game ends in a draw,

Ukraine will remain second and qualify for the first knock-out stage. If they lose, they will remain on three points regardless of what happens in the other group match, played simultaneously. The thing is though, they will need to wait and see if they will be one of the best four third-placed teams. Their current form reads; WLWWD. Coach Andriy Shevchenko played a 4-3-3 formation the other day, with Yaremchuk, Yarmolenko and Malinovskyi up front. The first two scored (both in the first half), while the latter missed a penalty in the 84th minute. If Ukraine drop third in the group table, that missed penalty may make all the difference (between being in the best four third-placed teams or not).

Austria debuted in the finals with a 3-1 win over North Macedonia, but their 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands has left them third in the table, level with Ukraine, having the same goal difference as well (neutral, nil), but having scored less goals than the Ukrainians. As previously mentioned, Austria will finish second in they win this game. Most probably, even a draw would be enough to push them through to the last 16, as one of the best four third-placed teams. If they lose, they get in serious-serious trouble… Their current form reads; LWDLL. Coach Franco Foda played a 3-1-4-2 formation against the Dutch the other day, with Baumgartner and Gregoritsch up front.

Ukraine and Austria have met just twice before, both were friendly matches and both had several goals. Ukraine won 2-1 as hosts in November 2011 and Austria won as well as hosts, 3-2, seven months later, just before the Euro 2012 finals.

A goalless draw is predicted at full-time.

Date: Monday, 21st of June, 2021.
